Yes, Poppets, We're Back...

...and, my, you're saying, how we've changed. It's been an exhausting summer, darlings. We have, however, taken up a new regimen guaranteed to turn us into the ever-youthful, always vibrant, eternally glamorous Arlene Dahl in no time.

We'll let you know as soon as it lands us a Lex Barker or Fernando Lamas - but, of course, that might bring on another hiatus.

Summer Reading

Last year, we spotlighted some of our favorite blogs and bloggers. In case you don't remember, this road map to fabulosity led you to: the legendary Fabulon, now reincarnated as Chateau Thombeau; midwestern glamour at Doing Hard Time in Shaker Heights; the jet-setting splendor that is Savoir Faire; fashion and design served up with a side of va-va-va-voom at Stella's Roar; the notorious j*o*e*, whose hell is definitely not for children; beautification from Vintage a Go-Go; the fine Italian hand of Suffering Fools Badly; classy asses from SissyDude; the babe of the bayou, the Cajun cutie, the Louisiana hayride himself, Jason of Night is Half Gone; Infomaniac, run by our resident headmistress (or mistress of head), MJ; Mean Dirty Pirate, or Reflections of a Lot Lizard; the blessedly-restored Cafe Muscato; the sophisticated snark that is the one, the only, Mr. Peenee; a Lethal Dose of hairhopping mayhem; and Our Mr. Brooks over at An Open Book. A late addition to this honor roll was Poseidon's Underworld, which is the nicest thing one can read the morning after. Today, we add another clutch of marvelous blogs to the list, some of which you already know and love, and some of which may be new to you. There are many, many more to be found on our Links; we wish we had the time to pay tribute to you all. Rest assured, a place among our links means we endorse you wholeheartedly! And if there are any blogs you crazy kids know of that we have yet to discover, please pass them along to us. Have fun exploring, darlings!

Here She Is, Boys

Yes, friends, our latest Mystery Guest was our favorite ecdysiast, Gypsy Rose Lee. Gypsy was perhaps even better known for her glamour and her lavish Parisian costumes than she was for taking them off; so it comes as no surprise that the first to guess was that international glamour boy himself, Muscato.

The former Rose Louise Hovick was the first to admit that she couldn't really dance, couldn't really sing, couldn't really act, and was more striking than pretty; but, as the song goes, she had a gimmick - as well as charm, wit and charisma to burn. Besides becoming the undisputed Queen of Burlesque, Gypsy starred in films (Babes in Baghdad, anyone?), had her own television chat show, and, of course, authored not only two well-received comic mystery novels, but her legendary memoirs.

The subsequent Broadway musical, starring Ethel Merman as Gypsy's sympathetic monster of a mother, Mama Rose, assured Gypsy Rose Lee immortality. Of course, both the book and the musical (and the eventual film version, with Roz Russell as Mama Rose and Natalie Wood as Gypsy) were factual accounts in name only; but the essence of the characters rang true. As John Steinbeck said of the book, "I bet some of it is even true, and if it wasn't, it is now."
